“I had a revealing conversation over the phone with this company. I signed up for this company to pick up my vehicle from my home online and got an offer. When I called to arrange the pickup, the employee asked questions which reasonably pertain to the logistics of a pickup. There is no problem so far. Everything is going as expected by this point. The employee asked where my car was and had an issue when I informed them that my car is in my garage. They asked if I could move the car from my garage into my driveway, and I could not. My garage floor is level, so their advice to put the vehicle in neutral and have gravity move my car did not apply. I can't push the car in neutral because I'm not a young man anymore. I asked if their vehicle had a winch, and yes, all of their vehicles have one. The employee assured me that their drivers were professional and knew how to use the winch. However, the person on the phone insisted that they do not use the winch because they had an accident where the driver did damage to a customer's garage wall while winching, damage they had to pay for. I offered them a multi approach plan to mitigate the risk of causing damage while winching, but the employee still found the idea to be too risky. They proposed that I agree to accept the risk, which is a no-go already, and they wanted to offer 25% less money than previously offered since they would have to spend time creating a contract that would release them from liability. That's a terrible offer. I asked if they were insured, and yes, they are insured. The employee then complained to me that their insurance rates for all of their towing operations increase with every accident. Yes, that's how insurance works. That is the cost of doing business. I'd gotten the offer for pickup without seeing a clear disclosure for fees or liability, and based off that advertised offer I called to arrange the pickup only to find the actual product was significantly materially less valuable than advertised. The employee told me I can take their offer with these conditions or not, going on to say that they buy 35-40 vehicles a week. I inferred that to mean they did not need my business, which is convenient because they lost it.”
