How to rank higher on Google Maps in St. Cloud, MN
First, the honest part
There's no trick, and nobody can sell you a guaranteed spot in the map pack. Google says so directly: "There's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google." What you can do is make your Business Profile and website the clearest, most complete and best-supported match for the searches your customers run. In a market the size of St. Cloud, where many trades have only 15–20 businesses in contention, that work often makes a visible difference. This guide covers what Google says matters, what we've measured locally, and what to do in what order.
What Google says determines local ranking
Google's Business Profile Help describes three main factors:
- Relevance: how well your profile matches the search. Your primary category, services, description and website content all count.
- Distance: how far you are from the searcher, or from the location named in the search. You can't change where your shop is, but you can make sure your address or service area is accurate.
- Prominence: how well-known your business is. Google specifically mentions links to your business from other websites, the number of reviews and positive ratings.
Google also says verified businesses with complete, accurate information are more likely to appear, and that responding to reviews and adding photos help.
What "good" looks like in St. Cloud right now
Generic advice says "get more reviews." Here's what that actually means for each trade in St. Cloud, from NextDoorScore's own observations:
| Trade | Businesses observed | Median Google reviews | Median NextDoorScore | Observed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Plumbers | 20 | 199 | 70.6 | Sep 24, 2026 |
| HVAC | 20 | 138.5 | 71.69 | Sep 24, 2026 |
| Roofers | 20 | 65.5 | 75.88 | Sep 24, 2026 |
| Electricians | 19 | 14 | 60.16 | Sep 24, 2026 |
| Tree service | 14 | 52 | 70.44 | Sep 24, 2026 |
| Pet grooming | 20 | 154.5 | 62.81 | Sep 29, 2026 |
The spread is the point. An electrician with 30 reviews is above the St. Cloud median. A plumber with 30 reviews is well below it. Benchmark yourself against your trade in your city, not against national averages.
The St. Cloud checklist, in priority order
1. Verify and own your Google Business Profile. If it isn't verified, nothing else on this list matters much. If a former employee or an old agency owns it, request ownership (see Claim your listing for Google's steps).
2. Get the primary category exactly right. Choose the most specific category that describes your main business, such as "Plumber," "HVAC contractor," "Roofing contractor," "Electrician" or "Pet groomer." Add secondary categories only for services you genuinely offer. Google's guidelines say categories describe what the business is, not keywords.
3. Complete every field. Hours (including holiday hours), phone, website, service area or address, services list, attributes, business description. A website is something Google can't use for relevance if it doesn't exist. Each NextDoorScore business page shows a "What customers can see" check for address, phone, website, hours, photos and category.
4. Match your service area to reality. If you're a service-area business, list the cities you actually serve, such as St. Cloud, Sartell, Sauk Rapids, Waite Park and St. Joseph. Hide your home address if customers don't visit it.
5. Build reviews steadily. Ask every satisfied customer, every time, with a direct review link sent by text or email after the job. Steady recent reviews beat a burst every two years. NextDoorScore's own score weights review recency, too. Don't offer discounts or gifts for reviews, and don't filter who you ask based on whether they're happy ("review gating"). Google's policies prohibit incentivized and fake reviews, and the FTC's rule on consumer reviews makes buying or faking reviews illegal.
6. Reply to reviews. Reply to all of them, including the bad ones. Keep it short and specific, and never include customer details. Future customers read your replies.
7. Add real photos regularly. Trucks, crews, finished jobs, your shop. Real photos from St. Cloud-area jobs help people recognize you.
8. Give your website a page per service and per city. A single "Services" page can't be the most relevant result for both "water heater repair St. Cloud" and "drain cleaning Sartell." Separate pages with real detail (what you do, where, typical process, photos, FAQs) are what NextDoorScore's content coverage factor checks for. Each published St. Cloud comparison includes a service × location content matrix showing which of these pages were detected on each competitor's site.
9. Fix the technical basics. A fast, mobile-friendly, indexable site with a unique title and meta description on each page, working links, and your name, address and phone matching your Google profile. That matching is what entity consistency measures.
10. Earn local links and citations. Chamber of commerce memberships, sponsorships of local teams and events, supplier "find a dealer" pages, local news coverage. These are the "links from other websites" Google mentions under prominence. Keep your name, address and phone identical everywhere.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to rank higher on Google Maps?
There's no fixed timeline, and no one can guarantee a result. Profile fixes like categories, hours and photos can be picked up quickly, while reviews and links build over months. Measure against a dated baseline so you can see what changed.
Can I pay Google to rank higher in the map pack?
No. Google says there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Google Ads can place a sponsored listing, but that's advertising, not organic ranking.
Does my NextDoorScore position affect my Google ranking?
No. NextDoorScore records the order Google returned for a search on a given date. It doesn't influence Google.
How many Google reviews do I need in St. Cloud?
It depends on your trade. In our latest St. Cloud observations, the median electrician had 14 reviews and the median plumber had 199. Compare yourself with your own trade's median.
Is it OK to offer a discount for a Google review?
No. Google's policies prohibit incentivized reviews, and the FTC's consumer-review rule prohibits buying reviews. Ask every customer, and offer nothing in exchange.
What's the difference between claiming NextDoorScore and claiming Google?
Your Google Business Profile controls what appears on Google. Claiming your NextDoorScore page gives you a free dashboard of your measured gaps. It doesn't give anyone control of your Google profile.
